In Jesus' teachings, we find profound truths about the nature of faith and its power over the physical world. Amidst the many parables and lessons, one poignant declaration he made illustrates the immense potential of unwavering belief: ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’ (Matthew 17:20).
Mountains can represent the trials and tribulations we face in life—those weighty challenges that loom large and may feel immovable — but they can also represent having natural physical things obey us, like the fig tree that obeyed Jesus, and sickness in others, and devils were all included to be subject to our faith. We need not think that this was not included in Jesus' teaching on the mountains and also the fig tree examples
We often think of ourselves as subjects to the world—overawed by the mountains of our challenges, feeling small amid their vastness. However, Jesus' proclamation invites us to reconsider this position. We are not mere bystanders in our lives, lost in a dizzying array of obstacles and adversities. Rather, with faith, the very essence of our belief can shape, bend, and move the world around us.
To harness this power effectively, we must cultivate a bold, unwavering faith deeply rooted in trust. It is crucial to remember that our faith is not a currency for material gain, but a spiritual force that transforms our inner lives and, by extension, our external realities. When we nurture faith, we imbue it with intention and conviction, effectively acknowledging that we wield the power to command the figurative mountains in our lives.
Jesus beckons us toward this recognition, delivering an empowering message that urges us to take ownership of our faith and its potential. When we embody this belief, we craft a remarkable existence where faith leads us, empowers us, and ultimately instructs the mountains in our lives to yield to the strength of our unwavering belief. Thus, may we carry forth in life with the faith of a mustard seed, knowing fully well that even the greatest obstacles must pay heed to its profound strength.
